In early 2023, a chance encounter between Pampamilya Paaralang Agrikultura (PPAFI) President, Mr. Rey de la Cruz, and Mayor Michael Oriyani of Lubang, Mindoro, sparked an ambitious collaboration aimed at transforming Lubang into an agricultural hub. During this meeting, Mr. de la Cruz introduced Mayor Oriyani to the concept of the Dual AgriTech training program. This initial conversation blossomed into a series of meetings that have since paved the way for the implementation of the agricultural technology training program, aligning perfectly with Mayor Oriyani’s vision of establishing Lubang as a center of agricultural innovation in the province.
The MOA signing is critical in getting this program started. Now, the real work begins.
The Dual AgriTech training is designed to equip young students with the skills and knowledge necessary for modern agricultural practices. It is divided into three phases: Electromechanics, Agricultural Production, and In-plant Training, and is modeled after the renowned German Dual Training System.
What to expect
In the first phase, students will attend the Dualtech Training Center, where they will undergo rigorous training in electrical, electronics, and mechanical courses. These foundational skills are critical in modern agriculture, where technology plays an increasing role. In the second phase, the students will transition to Dagatan Family Farm School (DFFS), where they will learn practical methods in both animal husbandry and crop production. The final phase will see the students immersed in real-life work environments through in-plant training, where they will gain hands-on experience in agricultural operations.
The combination of training at Dualtech and DFFS provides a holistic approach, merging cutting-edge technology with traditional farming practices. The students will learn modern agricultural techniques, including drone technology for monitoring crops, precision fertilization for optimal yield, and tunnel ventilation systems for climate-controlled farming environments.
On September 10, a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was signed between PPAFI and the Municipality of Lubang, formalizing the partnership and marking a significant milestone in the region’s agricultural development. The MOA signing ceremony, held at Dualtech, was attended by key figures from both organizations, setting the stage for the implementation of the program.
During the ceremony, Mr. Jerry Webb Muhi, President and Executive Director of Dualtech, highlighted the growing interest in agriculture from various sectors. “More and more entities are getting involved in agriculture,” Mr. Muhi said, underscoring the importance of collaborative efforts to modernize the industry. He added, “The MOA signing is critical in getting this program started. Now, the real work begins.”
PPAFI Chairman, Mr. Leopoldo Titular, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, calling the event “the first concrete step toward sustainability in agriculture.” He emphasized that this initiative, while just the beginning, has the potential to make a meaningful impact. “Helping a town like Lubang signifies hope—not just for the municipality but for the many rural communities across the country,” he stated. “There is real hope for the peripherals to modernize and prosper, and this program is a step in that direction.”
In his response, Honorable Mayor Michael Oriyani conveyed his optimism for Lubang’s future. “May katuparan na sa aming pangarap,” the mayor said, sharing how this partnership represents the realization of long-held dreams for the municipality. He went on to affirm that with this new initiative, Lubang’s future is “makulay and puno ng pag-asa”—colorful and full of hope.
As the partnership unfolds, the collaboration between PPAFI, Dualtech, and the Municipality of Lubang is expected to bring long-term benefits to the community, equipping the next generation with the skills they need to lead in agricultural innovation and sustainability. This initiative will not only improve local livelihoods but also contribute to the broader goal of advancing the agricultural sector in the country.
The success of the Dual AgriTech program depends on the collective efforts of individuals, organizations, and institutions dedicated to empowering the next generation of agricultural leaders.
